History and objectives

After Paul Duvigneaud’s death in Decembre 1991, his family decided to safeguard the numerous literature he had gathered during his life and to make it available not only to students and researchers but also to a keen public. A year later, at the end of 1992 a non-profit association was created, and a Reading room was inaugurated in November 1994. It was located for 6 years in a building of the Université Libre de Bruxelles on the site of the Jardin expérimental Jean Massart de l’ULB , the premises being made available by the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and furnished by the Institut Bruxellois pour la Gestion de l'Environnement (the Brussels Institute for the management of the environment) thanks to the support of the then Minister for the Environment of Bruxelles-Capitale.

In August 2000 the Paul Duvigneaud Centre collection was transferred to the new premises of a new organisation, the CiVA (Centre international pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage: International Centre for the City, Architecture and Landscape) where it joined five other non-profit organisations also involved in the general study of the urban context: Bibliothèque René Pechère , Espaces verts & Art des Jardins; Archives d’Architecture moderne ; Fondation pour l'Architecture; Fondation Philippe Rotthier.

While it is true that our association attempts to collect as much biological and ecological data on Brussels as possible, its scope extends far beyond Brussels. The aims of this non-profit organisation, as defined in Chapter 1, Article 3 of the Statutes, are:

Activities
Member is not essential to take part in our activities.
The Paul Duvigneaud Centre is a reading centre as well as a centre for bibliographical and documentation research, the pivot being :
  • the LIBRARY: open to all, free of charge.
Our association also organises :

  • FIELD ACTIVITIES to discover in an original way one or other site of Brussels, through the wealth its natural sites (les dernières sorties; agenda)

  • other ACTIVITIES on the theme of urban biodiversity (flora and fauna), particularly in the Brussels-Capital Region ; information stands with related activities can be set up during  neighbourhood festivities ; specific activities for schools (both elementary and secondary levels) ; workshops and games for children (day camps…).
Access to a site with high biological value is not essential : on the opposite, a city park, a fallow piece of land, the embankment on a railway line… can all be good places to sensitize participants to “common” biodiversity. All categories of public are welcome.
Contact us to take part in any of these activities !
  • EXHIBITIONS, held sporadically and generally devoted to aspects of the flora and fauna in relation to urban management or landscape. Exhibition posters, accompanied by an information brochure (always available) can be borrowed upon request (nos expositions)

  • PUBLICATIONS : minutes of symposiums, texts of lectures, exhibitions ; information and awareness-raising brochures ; articles published in the periodicals of various associations, etc (archives)

The Paul Duvigneaud Centre is at the disposal of other associations, groups (neighbourhood committees…) and can organise presentations, lectures or other activities.
